Do you have to rely on social media?

I get questions all the time about what problems people are having and how to improve in their business.

Here's one inquiry I received last month that I'm just getting around to. Enjoy.

“Ironically enough , I truly don't want to rely on social media , my hard work goes into my paperwork , logistics , labor , I don't and can't understand how social media gets a big part of recognition for who you are , or who's to say "social media warrants your good work" , yes there's reviews , yes there's a buzz , but I just don't have the time and at the end of the day , the energy , and to hire someone to do strictly that , seems a long way away.”

No one said you have to 'rely' on social media. It's just a tool some people use to advance their business reach or brand awareness. Some just know how to use it better than others. Social media is great with presenting social proof.  Social proof is a way of gaining attention from people because “others” are doing it or participating. You’ve probably looked up a video on YouTube before, am I right? You’ve probably encountered a situation where the same exact video was displayed twice. Most people look at the 'number of viewers' statistic displayed near the video to determine something. I’ll give you the choice.

For example:
  • Let’s say the first video was viewed over 1,000,000 times and the second video was viewed a little over 40,000 times. Which one do you choose? When I give this example, a high majority of people would have chosen the 1 million plus video, but why? It’s because of social proof. Our minds have been wired to think that if everyone else has viewed this one video, then it must be the quality. It must be better than the other, we presume. That's of many reasons of what it could be?
  • If you were driving across the country and you wanted to get something to eat and nearby were two diners next door to each other. One has 7 cars in the parking lot in front of the diner and the other had none. Which one would you eat at? Again social proof would have the majority choose the diner with the most people eating there.

I say all this to say, social media is about the use of how it benefits your business not on reliance. Many consider social media to be their only level of marketing but why do we use social media? We use social media because it gives us a global connection. It provides the ability to be seen and heard without ever leaving your home, neighborhood, city or country. It presents the opportunity to share with others and take a view of other activities around the world.

The bottomline is this, it's marketing. But what is marketing? Wikipedia describes Marketing as communicating the value of a product, service or brand to customers or consumers for the purpose of promoting or selling that product, service, or brand.

All in all you do not have to ‘rely’ on social media but it is a medium of usage that can benefit a brand in how it’s seen and represented in the eyes of someone that has never heard of you. The likes, comments, retweets, shares etc are just statistics you can measure to how well you’re delivering your message, how well it's spreading and engaging your target audience. Talking and being social are not the same. You can talk until you’re blue in the face but being social means you are engaging with others that have a similar interest. The wonders you could do with knowing a network of people agree with your ideas, products and values of your business.

Personal social media accounts are another story but as for business, you’ll either see if social media can improve your business or not improve your business. You don’t have to be on all social media platforms either. Just on the ones where your target audience or engaged network congregates the most. So many people don’t check their emails unless it involves work. Many others barely reply to phone calls or texts but millions of people check their social media accounts when they wake up, several times throughout the day and even before going to sleep at night. Social media is an opportunity to be seen by those paying attention and your business can be just that, an opportunity to solve a problem they may have. If and how you use this tool is up to you and to this day the oldest – and perhaps simplest and most natural form of marketing – is 'word of mouth' (WOM) marketing, in which consumers convey their experiences of a product, service or brand in their day-to-day communications with others. It's all up to you.

Have a great week. :)

Artist Manager Defined: Do's & Don'ts... Short & Sweet

I'll keep this short and sweet.

   Manager Roles
Their main role is enhancing a clients career
Let’s see if you have the right manager around you and what a manager actually is. A Manager is a:
·       Planner
·       Adviser
·       Organizer
·       Strategist
·       Overseer
·       Manipulator
·       Coordinator
·       Buffer
·       Detailed person
·       Travel companion
·       Friend (Trust)
·       Catalyst
·       Stakeholder

According to Billboard books, "Managers are people or firms that work with record companies, producers, agents, promoters, publicists and anyone else that’s necessary. The objective of a manager is simple: To make sure everyone pulls together with effectiveness and enthusiasm to make the artist shine. If that sounds like a tough order, just know that the reality of doing it consistently is even tougher.

Jim Morey, that worked with Neil Diamond and Dolly Parton said it best, “The artist is the corporation and the manager is the CEO.”

Manager Do’s and Don’ts

What a manager does, better yet, what they don’t do.
·       Promoting and exploiting – That's a Music Publisher (See above of the things a manager is to focus on for you to be a success)

·       Book your shows – That's a Booking Agent (Booking your shows and getting you paid gigs is not their job. They can partner and network with resources to get you access to these things but that's really the job of a booking agent... which you (the artist) pay for.

·       Pay your bills (Cell phone, studio time, showcases, etc.) - Don't even get me started. Investing in yourself is up to you. If a manager invests their money into your career they have now become an investor not a manager. Be careful with toting this line as you may end up with less ownership of your works even after a possible split up from your management team.

Keeping this short, simple and to the point will help you define who's already around you and if you had in mind the right things a manager is to be doing during your evaluation. How to find a good manager... coming soon.

How my first business FAILED...

3fe326f
I remember my first company. Man, it was great. It was actually a great business. Surprisingly, it was something that wasn't done yet, by anyone, until a few years later. Now this was 1998, I think, and I was revved up to make this business a future cornerstone. I was coaching basketball to youths at the time and while watching a professional game, the idea hit me. My business was a developmental league that would be a kind of minor league system for NBA teams. Like how the New York Yankees built their minor league farm system to produce some of the Yankee legends such as Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.
I worked a few leagues and got some considerable attention due to being so young and already coaching basketball on a fundamental level. This was the best business for athletes that wanted to learn a bit more than what college would teach them about playing in the NBA.
NBA Development League Logo.svg
But there was one key thing that was the main cause of my business failing. Quite simply, I never got started. Yep, as simple as not getting started, I failed at one of the best ideas I ever had. Fast forward to 2001, I'm a graduating high school senior and the announcement comes out that the National Basketball Association Developmental League (NBDL or D-League) was born. You want to talk about devastated? All I had to do was look in the mirror to point the blame. A huge bummer, but I knew back then that I was on to something and I bet you are too.
Now, I've gone on to create, own and partner with several other businesses to increase my business knowledge. I wound up spending a decade in the music industry doing pretty well but nothing quite like my first business or rather "the business that never happened". I made it my goal to never let anyone I encounter ever have that kind of failure. And that means YOU. Yes, YOU!!!

To have the kind of regret I had, for never getting started with something I really wanted and I won't let you do it to yourself either. By being a part of this Power Group of mine, I'll be giving you, literally giving away my knowledge, tips, strategies and even my resources to help you reach your goals, create your own business or improve what you may have already started. I only have 3 things I ask of you:
1) OPEN EVERY EMAIL I SEND YOU. (You'll learn to expect my emails as they will be packed with substantial information and opportunities)
2) Go through the message in the email and respond with your answers, thoughts and feedback. (It's important to participate/do the exercises)
3) Let me know what else you would like to learn. (If you have specific questions, just reply to the email and I will personally reply to you with a direct answer and I might include it in future emails so everyone can learn what to do in the same situation)
If you do these 3 things every time I send an email to you, you won't need toGoogle the best ways to run, operate and even profit from your business. You'll be able to see the change in your business and in your life. You are going to start winning and you'll have the tools you need, just by applying the principles and advice I'll be giving to you, that will help you WIN
Aren't you ready to start winning? I bet you are. Start winning today by taking a quick survey.

Shaheim Says... Asking for advice isn't a crime.

Hello Everyone,

I've noticed that so many people want to be successful and that's awesome. I think it's fantastic that they want to do something with their lives. They even want to do something to help someone else's life as well. But I collectively witness that many of them, if not most, aren't willing to ask for help to do it. Asking for help isn't a crime. It's not that bad, especially if it will enrich your life or help you get to your goal. Paying for advice seems to be even more egregious to people as they feel they won't get the result they were looking for (but they still pay for college but that's another story). So why is it so many don't do it? Why don't they ask for advice? You know why? Because "what's easy to do is also easy not to do." - Jim Rohn

"Don't wish it were easier, wish you were better." - Jim Rohn

Listen, I became a consultant to help others make sense of all those ideas and dreams they have. I help people break down the barriers to reveal the person they are happy to live with... themselves. It's not easy showing people their reflection and the perception they are giving off without them realizing it. Take control of your life by taking control of your thoughts, feelings and most of all your actions and move them into one direction for personal achievement and growth.

"Success is what it means to you." - Shaheim Kellum

So ask yourself what it truly means to have victory. I bet I can show you plenty of victories in your life and some we all take for granted. So, how hard is it to ask for help? To some it's gut wrenching, to others it's easy and for the rest it's what they needed all along but kept on denying to themselves the idea that it might actually work. People are out there in many professions looking to tell their story so they can help someone else, you just have to ask. 3 Simple Things That Help Us Fail?

3 Simple Things That Help Us Fail?

You'd be surprised to find out that 3 simple things help us fail. Bottom line, these 3 things prevent us from succeeding.

Listen, I have a passion for helping people in their business. I know a lot and I feel I'm knowledgeable enough to give advice, so I decided to become a consultant. Being a consultant was a good way to show people how to get it right. To understand how to help other businesses, I had to take a moment and look at myself. What is it that was keeping me from succeeding? And it turns out, I wasn't the only one having this problem.
3 Simple Things That Help Us Fail

Simple Thing  #1
I'll be the lab rat to explain what I went through and what I learned. I've always been able to come up with great ideas but I also used to get distracted a lot. I would add other things to my idea and begin a new brainstorm session. My thoughts then begin to scatter and the original idea gets overwhelmed. When it would be time to define what I wanted to do, I'd be so overwhelmed with so many thoughts that I would try to explain it all. I would try to do too much. Now people around always suggest to focus on one thing but my brain doesn't work that way. And apparently I'm not alone.

My Diagnosis: I was suffering from an Unclear Vision. I've had this happen to me for a long time. Maybe, the effects of knowing too much, huh!

My Treatment: I figured out a way to combine many of my ideas together using their common elements to produce tangible goals and desired results.

Simple Thing  #2
You ever get that feeling that you have to do everything yourself and so you try to, it eventually seems to get you no where, and you begin to feel "stuck"? Ughhh. Most of all, you're working hard but not seeing the results? You see, I'm always willing to try new things and I would try to do as much as I could to feel like I was getting things done. I had some good habits to help me stay organized which I felt was a good thing. I used to create a "to-do-list" to keep me on task. My problem was that it was always 25+ items long. None of which really focused on what I really needed to accomplish or too many things I felt I needed to be doing to accomplish my goals. My schedules would be full to the max and I'd get super busy. Running myself into exhaustion and burnout. You know the feeling?

My DiagnosisLike so many others, I was suffering from Unclear Objectives. Too many "things to do" and not enough focused on getting something accomplished. Feeling overwhelmed but letting my pride get in the way to say I didn't need any help or assistance. Being super busy with "stuff"
My Treatment: I found that, there are a lot of busy people out there but their not being productive. I finally stopped myself from being so busy. A subject I speak about now called "Stop being busy and start being productive." This concept allows me to teach, in 3 simple steps, how to create and execute the short term activities to accomplish my long term goals. No more burn-out and no more not having enough time in a day.

Simple Thing  #3
To be honest, sometimes, I wouldn't even do certain tasks because my "to-do-list" was so overwhelming that I couldn't... better yet... didn't set aside the time. I would just push it along on the calendar and set a new due date. Bad time management played a huge part of my non-productive ways and created a deeper void in my life and the dream of succeeding started slipping away. This was about 5 years ago.

All these little things I was overlooking or waiting for the last moment to address was hindering my success. It was making me reactive to situations rather than following the plan I set forth. You remember being in school and your teacher telling you that you have a paper that needs to be turned in by a certain date in the far future? I know you remember this. So let me ask you this? When did you start on writing the paper? hmm?

I'll wait...

Some of you gave yourself ample time and the rest did it with the clock ticking. Probably the night before and stayed up all night to complete it. Sound familiar? Just like the ladder, I wasn't giving myself the adequate time to not feel rushed into completing a task and in business this can be detrimental to the future of the company.

My DiagnosisI was suffering from chronic Procrastination.

My Treatment: Stop wasting my own time and focus on setting a doable plan that leads to the completion of my goal, with ample time to spare for corrections. It's one thing to be known to get a task done, it's another to be known to getting it done ahead of all expectations. Legendary Personal Development Speaker and Mentor, Jim Rohn said,
"What is easy to is easy not to do." How true this statement is.

Napoleon Hill, author of "Think & Grow Rich" said "a big success is made up from a great number of little circumstances each of which may seem so small and insignificant most people pass them by as not being worthy of notice."

I figured out why most businesses fail and most of all why I was failing. It was those 3 simple things: I had unclear visions, unclear objectives and I procrastinated.

Over the years, I've studied and worked on better productivity, narrowing down my things to do and thinking about the vision in everything I did. These 3 things were not easy to correct and I didn't have a mentor to teach me how to do it. I had a willingness to succeed and saw the adverse effects in my life if I continued the way I was going. Something had to change. I had to change. I started to take off layers from my main vision and focus on what I specifically wanted to gain. I began forming all my ideas around just that one goal. I detailed my tasks to only 6, which would be the most productive and of the highest priority to reach my goal and then I immediately got started on the most important one.
It changed my life and I decided it was time to start helping others change theirs. Success is great and it's even better when other people get to experience it too.
