Is Corporate America really gaining ground and running over us?

Hello,

I get questions all the time about what problems people are having and how to improve in their business.

Here's one inquiry I received last month that I'm just getting around to. Enjoy.

“I feel like "corporate America" is still gaining ground and running over "us" (small guys) "Small guys who desire to get ahead , offer people something better for their money and a brand, not "bigger is better." I see a lot of folks lose / {get} lost in the system ....”

I wondered about this some time ago and I came to the conclusion to change my perspective about this. Corporate America is looked at as a whole. My business is just one of many, but do I focus on the many or just the one that matters to me the most? Just like climbing a mountain, it’s all about the steps “I” take. You may one day build a company large enough to create employment and partnership opportunities, provide jobs, offer benefits and a possible way for people to make a living for themselves and their families. You may one day become part of the world of corporations and big business within the United States or all over the world. Does that make you any different than a large corporation?

Corporations are offering a product or service, just like you are. I understand that you will want that product to be superior to the next, right? And that’s what competition is all about. Providing a better product for those it solves a problem for. Better doesn't always mean most expensive or top quality, better could just mean convenient.

Are the larger corporations “running over us”? They definitely have the advantage but corporations are fighting for the same thing we strive for as business owners and entrepreneurs... leverage and access. You may have access to a network that a large company may not have access to. You might have control and immediate engagement with the same target customer as a major organization. Many times in business, this is when the phone starts ringing and these large corporations want to work with you for access to what you leverage. Who needs who at this point?

You already know that “bigger isn’t always better” and the smallest of change for convenience or accessibility can change the balance of people’s lives. The product doesn’t need to be “greatest invention in the history of the world”, it just has to solve a problem for the people that it matters to the most. Corporations have a tough time deciphering what it is people actually want and you have the ability to do it every day when you speak to people. I don't think their running over you, their just good at finding what they need to survive. Gaining ground is all about progress. {See "The Struggle with Time Article"} Your perspective on Corporate America happens to be similar to what you will be dealing with to get ahead. Learn their perspective and make a better way to influence the people your business matters to the most.

Have a great week. :)

Shaheim

Do You Really Need a Manager?

Do You Really Need a Manager?

You may honestly think you do and that may be so but do you know what a manager is supposed to do for you? What kind of asset is he/her to your current level? Will your manager have to wear more hats than necessary? Remember your manager is not your ATM or your booking agent. They are theoretically a knowledgeable guide or an individual or company who guides the professional career of artists in the entertainment industry.
What if you could manage yourself? Some of you already are. But what if you learned and applied the knowledge in how to manage yourself in the real world. You see, a friend of mine told me this, "for an artist to be successful, they must either listen extremely well or have a lot of money." If you're the ladder then you have expendable income to be able to make mistakes and it not really effect your finances. If you're like the many artists that I've met over the years, finances are not as dispensable and every dollar spent is crucial. Now, what if you were taught how to hire people to your team, how to network and how to build a proper fan base (outside of just social media)? What if you were shown how to make a profit in the same system that has been keeping you out of ring. Would you be interested? Then what's stopping you from applying these principles? I do have the answers. I guarantee you would be much more productive than you are right now and all you'll need is a little bit of money to do it. Oh, but you're still going to need to listen extremely well for it to work.

I've conducted market research and asked a significant number of talent and professionals, around the U.S., questions about what they would consider a need in order to have a career in today’s music business.
Questions such as:
• Other than money, what struggles does an Independent Artist go through?
• What’s the biggest misconception that independent talents have?
• How do I build a real fan base and make money?

After compiling the information gathered and deliberating on the most important effects, I have been on a mission to help talent that is willing to devote their time into building a business from their entertainment careers.

So, guess what? I'm going to write a book on artist development. Stay tuned.

Shaheim Says... Networking is ONLY handing over your business card?

Shaheim Says...

"Networking is more than just handing over a business card, it's making an investment in yourself." - Shaheim Kellum

Huh? How could it be an investment in yourself, you ask? Easy, it's you choosing yourself and you putting forth the effort to learn about yourself. For example, you attend a networking event and speak to a person that seems to be of interest. The conversation is brief and non-engaging. And let's say you hand your business card to the person. Will they call? Maybe. Maybe not. But you would not have learned anything about yourself until the person takes action on either side. If the person calls, though your conversation was brief and non-engaging, it may have been powerful enough for the person to consider you a resource or an opportunity. If the person doesn't call, then it has taught you that you may want to work on your engagement and conversation skills.

You see, the business card is the proposal or offer you give out to make a connection for further conversation, acquisition of services and/or future endeavors. But the real lesson is how effective you were in opening your mouth. As I always say "every time you open your mouth, you tell the world who you are, so you might as well have something to say." Shaheim Says Video...

So let me ask you this, would you invest into something that is worth it? What about yourself, do you think you're worth it? Do you feel like you are worth your own time? The thought of you not answering "YES" to these questions would be astounding as we all think we're worth it. (You better be, if you're looking to be in business.) But knowing that you would invest into something that you feel is worth it, is one of the greatest obstacles to overcome in making a decision. Don't you agree?

"Time to take action."
Let's dramatically improve your business.

Choosing Yourself

Choosing yourself has to be one of the best concepts I ever learned. What do I mean? I mean, you don't need someone to say "I choose {insert your name here} or "I choose you."

You, can say it. Will it mean anything? Well, that's up to you. You see, people have this notion we've grown accustomed to where we seek the approval or recommendation of others to be chosen. To feel like we've made it. Do you need someone to tell you that you're a leader, an innovator or a success? If you think it's possible or you think it's so, then do it for you.

"Success is what it means to you." - Shaheim Kellum

I'll explain that quote at another time but the point is, you can choose. And if no one has ever said it to you before, YOU, can choose you.

So now that you're the "Chosen One", you can make an investment into yourself. Your personal knowledge, your productivity and your capabilities are all areas of value. They're valuable to you and others but until you invest in the development of yourself, you won't grow. (

Challenge

Here's my challenge to you. Challenge yourself by asking, what did I learn about myself in a given situation. It could be an interaction, performing an activity or studying a new concept to implement in your business. Every situation, every interaction and every activity has a lesson to be learned. How you find that lesson is a reflection of your current understanding of yourself. So it's important to be honest with yourself, and if you don't know then you don't know but the challenge is to find out.

To reach your goals this year, you should do these 6 Steps.

 Follow Me

Well 2015 is here and if you like it or not, your unfinished goals from last year are still here too. The only reason they made it this far is because they're still on your list of things to do. Now it's time to stop procrastinating and get some of those goals accomplished.

  1. Break down your goals into specific and attainable ones. When the New Year comes in, we tend to set goals that are too vague or very general. You have to get specific. Break down the goal to what it is you specifically want to attain by accomplishing it. Set a date of completion and make it attainable. If you want to sell 1 million books, that's great but let's start by selling the first 100, okay?
  2. Have an action plan. When we are working on a project or a task or tackling something on our to do list, it's never just what's on the list.We tend to add so many things to the task that we fail to ever get started on the one we set out to do. Stop looking at the mountain of stairs and think about the step in front of you. Each task should be broken down (like in step 1) to get you closer to your ultimate goal. Take it one at a time before moving to the next step in your plan.
  3. Partner up/network with people. Sometimes just "thinking" that you can do all the work yourself is too much to handle. So why try to do it all on your own? Try to connect with people of like minds and, in some areas, excelled capabilities to help you get your tasks done. I always say "instead of having 1 person do 100% of the work, get 100 people to do 1% each." (And yes, that does equal 100%).
  4. Be prepared for obstacles. Back in the tenth grade I read John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" for my English class. I wasn't the biggest fan of reading at the time but I did affix a quote to myself from it. One of the best quotes I've read in it was, "the best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray." So true indeed. This quote helped me understand that no matter how hard you plan and how much you think ahead, when the time comes to take action something will go wrong. Things never go as planned so expect them not to. Be prepared and be proactive in anticipating the challenges that may arise.
  5. Do not think failure is not an option. Failure is an option and so is success. You have to decide what your option will be. What you know you should be doing but in turn don't do at all, is a key example of failure being an option. An option you choose by not doing what you should be doing to achieve your goal. Let me be clear, even if you do the things you planned but still don't reach your goal doesn't mean you've failed. It just means you may have some tweaking to do before your success. Find out what it is early and adjust. "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." (Thomas A. Edison)
  6. Be decisive in your choices. I can't say it any clearer. Be decisive. Take out all of the excess remnants of other peoples opinions that aren't helping you achieve your goal. Remove all the excess "fluff" when people are explaining things to you and train your mind to get to the point of it, so you can make a logical decision. Try the Cost-Benefit Analysis which asks "What will it cost me? How will I benefit? and What is the risk? If the benefit can't outweigh the other two factors then the decision is easy... you don't do it. See? That wasn't hard. Now apply it to all your future decisions. One more thing, when I say "cost", I'm not just talking about money, the most valuable aspect you have in life is your time. Spend it wisely.
